If you are familiar with the first Monster High Book, you might already know that Lisi Harrison, author of many teen oriented novels, created a different setting than the MH animated show or webisodes. While the series sets the MH teens in a high school and universe filled with monsters, Harrison´s setting is in our world, specifically the state of Oregon. Regular humans are called normies while the monster kids refer to themselves as Regular Attribute Dodgers.

The first Monster High Book introduces Melody as a central normie teen along with Frankie Stein as well as the other RAD teenagers. Melody and Frankie have similar issues as they are both new to Oregon and struggling to adjust and fit in with other kids amidst all of the changes in their lives.

This second book, titled “The Ghoul Next Door¨, brings in Cleo De Nile as a major character. She becomes jealous when many of her loyal friends begin to show interest in Melody and Frankie and start hanging out more with them. Cleo is apparently a bit of a diva.

The Monster High book series addresses many of the issues that teen girls face as they try to mature and navigate through complicated social experiences. Those who are not into the dramatic teen angst novels permeating the young adult book section might like Harrison´s creative take on growing up. Fans of the series might be disappointed with the deviation from the setting, but if the reader can put that detail aside she may find a lot to like in these books.
